How to use a USB Flash Drive as RAM in Windows XP

Tech With Dinjin201 – Tech Tips – Episode 1: Here, i will show you how to use a USB Flash Drive as RAM… A few Notes about this: 1. Flash memory can only be written to an x number of times (about 10 million rewrites). this means that after 1-2 years, your “flash-ram” will stop working, and you will have to buy another memory stick… 2. The second thing i wanted to mention is that you need to use ATLEAST a 512 MB Flash Drive for this. I know i used a 128 MB one in the video, but that’s all …

    @citroable: no. You should first meet the requirements for the game (1GB) before you use this. It will speed up the game, but you risk crashing your system if you don’t meet req’s first.

    @vikramkumarsharma: not exactly. On newer computers I would recommend this, however, old pc’s have extremely slow hard drives and this will affect your read/write time when opening large programs, further slowing the machine…

    @pl4rk: not exactly. The port just remains the same. What you should do is put 2x 2Gb sticks – so it’s Like pumping water thru 2 hoses (USB ports) at the same time.

    In fact there are no need to use usb drive for this you can use free space of your hard disk which is more good to prevent any damage of paging file of Xp

    if you have a, let’s say, 8GB usb, does it also have more speed then?

    Here’s a tip; A paging file is not RAM. If you need more RAM, the best solution is to acquire more RAM. Paging files are best left on hard drives, where writes aren’t nearly so damaging.

    I know you said that if you pulled it out while the comp was still on that it would prolly cause your comp to crash… But what if you pulled it out while the computer is off, and then reinserted it later, would that affect anything?

    @mrabc16: you’re welcome. The problem with this is that your ram must be faster or at the same speed as te USB. At the same time, the drive that you’re using must be a tad slow. All this together will keep the computer from speeding up. Not much can be done in this case :( sorry. As I mentioned earlier, this works for most old pc’s. Unfortunately you seem to be an exception :(

    @mrabc16:

    Your computer properties will not show the change. This is somewhat of a hack and is not supported by windows. Also, what size did you install, and did you try running a realy heavy game?

    “MAKE SURE TO SHUTDOWN COMPUTER FIRST”

    There is no any option to safe unmount the drive like in Unix based operating systems?

  18. Viseual1 16 November 2009 at 5:27 am #

    Does this combine with the ram installed or does the comp use the flashdrive?

    This is really good, the max RAM in XP for 32 bit is 4gb, 64 bit is 128gb.

    Server 08 is different 32 bit : 64gb 64 bit: 2tb (yes terabytes).
